Women's Fiction: Your Favourite Quiet Reads

I write what are typically called “quiet books”, women’s fiction with character-driven stories about relationships and the choices we make and human emotions and all that good stuff. Not surprisingly, those are also the kinds of books I love to read.

Thanks to (the perfect) thank you gift I received in the form of a Chapters gift card, I have no choice but to buy books. (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Like there is EVER any choice about buying books!)

So I want to know what I’m missing. What quiet books or otherwise great women’s fiction have you read this last year or so that you’ve found yourself thinking about after the fact and recommending to friends? Who are the characters who’ve stayed with you long after you closed the book?

Please share! I know there are many great books out there I haven’t yet heard of, and I’d love to know what some of them are.

Thank you!

  1. Oh, Kathy! Do I have books for you… I’m a member of the Women’s Fiction Writers Association and our 700+ members have scads of books for you.

Try Amy Sue Nathan, Barbara Claypole White, Kathryn Craft, Susan Meissner. Let me know when you want more. πŸ˜‰

  2. I really don’t read many “grown up” books. I did enjoy A TALE FOR THE TIME BEING, and I love Sarah Addison Allen’s books (if you haven’t read her work, maybe start with GARDEN SPELLS or THE PEACH KEEPER…my faves of hers). Oh, and I loved Gabrielle Zevin’s THE STORIED LIFE OF A.J. FIKRY.

  3. Hello Kathy — I just happened to come upon this. I am thinking you were Kathy Powel? on Seamount Road?

I am Jo Booth (Jennifer, Richard and Leanne’s mom). I taught Brownies with your mother. It was wonderful to read your postings – I understand by one of them you have a daughter. How lovely. Is your mother still in Richmond? retired?

Just thinking about “the good old days” with fond memories.

If you have time and would like to send me an email, I would love to hear from you.

    With fond memories, Jo
